The Office Stereo

The Fogg Associates office stereo is such a central part of our culture that I like to think of it as an extra colleague sat in the corner of the room rather than a piece of machinery. He’s a controversial character though; one that has the whole office humming and whistling in tandem at the best of times, but also one that is at the bitter end of many under-the-breath cusses and outcries of “what the hell is this?!”.

So, for the sake of our poor friend, and yours (if you have one), I have compiled this small list of office-friendly tunes that are light enough you to ignore if you need to knuckle down and concentrate, but inspiring enough to help you along creatively if you need a moment to think.

Metro Area – Miura

A chilled out house tune with a stabby bassline and melodic chorus that can get any foot tapping, no matter what day of the week it is.

Marlena Shaw – California Soul

This tune is mostly suited to a nice summer’s day, but it can be brought out when the weather’s not so much like it is in California to lift some stress from a particularly busy day. This one’s a particular favourite of Chris’.

SBTRKT – Hold On (Feat. Sampha)

Silky smooth vocals and harmonies give this song enough to hum along to without being too distracting.

Jamie XX – Girl

This one’s probably been played about 50 times in the office since we discovered it about a year ago, and we’re still loving it. His new album ‘In Colour’ is worth checking out.

Pretty Lights – Finally Moving

Using a familiar guitar riff and a vocal sample that is also used in Avicii’s ‘Levels’ means this chilled track can be hummed along to by almost anyone.

Foo Fighters – Times Like These

This one’s especially for Mike. Some could say they’re a bit ‘crashy’ for the office but Mike loves the Foos so we’ll let him have this one.

Justin Timberlake РSe̱orita

This one needs a little bit of an explanation. Although this hasn’t been implemented for quite some time, for some reason we used to have a tradition in our office that JT must be played on a Friday afternoon. You might be thinking this sounds a bit weird but there’s something about his tunes that really get the Friday feeling going, give it a go!
